4 Ways to Celebrate Creativity

Calling all artists, poets, musicians and actors! This week is National Keep Kids Creative Week, which is dedicated to encouraging children to embrace creativity. There are tons of ways to get your child’s creative juices flowing at home. Here are a few to get started.

  1. Create a family book club. This is a fun way to encourage reading and spend quality time together. Each family member can take turns choosing age-appropriate books each month for everyone to read. Bring the story to life by creating costumes, props and even recipes based on the characters, setting and storyline.
  2. Direct your own movie. As a family, create something to film- a skit, comedy show, sports program, play, dance performance, etc. Dress in costume, assign roles, and recite your own dialogue. Then, film the “movie” on your camera or phone and host a screening party for family and friends.
  3. Explore the outdoors. Encourage your kids to learn more about space, the planet, animals and nature by taking them to your local planetarium or on a hike through a nature trail. When they get back home, they can draw pictures and list their favorite facts about the planets, animals or plants they saw.
  4. Pick out a weekly craft. Unleash your child’s inner Picasso by picking out a craft to complete each week using paint, chalk, clay, paper and other materials. Theme your craft to match the season you’re in or to celebrate any upcoming holidays or birthdays.

We hope these fun activities help you and your family celebrate creativity. Show us how you get creative on Facebook and Twitter!
