The Puma Award – How a Three-Legged Dog Inspired a Mission to Help Others

Some awards commemorate achievements. The Puma Award commemorates love, second chances, and the power of compassion.

A few months ago, we created a beautiful jade glass award for a veterinary professional and mission organization. But this isn't just about the plaque we made—it's about the extraordinary story behind it. A story that begins in the streets of Cusco, Peru, and ends with a three-legged dog who changed everything.

The Day That Changed Everything

Our customer was running a spay and neuter clinic in Cusco when he encountered a dog struggling on the streets. The dog—later named Puma—was severely injured, suffering from paralysis and infection in his left forelimb.

With careful skill and compassion, the veterinarian performed the necessary surgery: neutering and amputation. But then came the decision that most would have moved past. Instead, this veterinarian did something remarkable. He called his wife in Baltimore and asked permission to bring Puma home.

Three flights. Two continents. One determined effort to give a struggling dog a second chance at life.

A New World

Puma arrived at a house that already had three dogs. But something shifted from that very first day. What was meant to be temporary became permanent. For the next 13 years of Puma's 14-year life, he wasn't just living in a new home—he was living his best life.

Yes, he was missing a limb. But what he gained was immeasurable: safety, love, family, and the kind of belonging that only comes from being truly wanted. His adoptive father became his anchor, his companion, and the person who would carry him forward through every challenge a three-legged dog might face.

"I may have been his fourth leg for his 13 years of life," our customer reflects. "Yet he was to me, so much more."

The Bridge Between Two Worlds

This isn't just a story about saving one dog. Puma's arrival in Baltimore became the catalyst for something far larger. Inspired by the bond he had developed with Puma and the mission work in Peru, our customer went on to found GeoVeterinary International, a nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing veterinary care to communities in need across the Americas.

Puma became more than a pet. He became a symbol—a living bridge between Peru and the United States, between a profession and a calling, between the comfort of home and the courage required to help others.

And he became a reminder that one compassionate decision can ripple outward in ways we never expect.

A Legacy Honored

When Puma's health finally declined, his story didn't end—it transformed. Our customer honored his beloved companion by naming an award in his honor: the Premio de Puma (the Puma Award).

This award was created to recognize extraordinary individuals doing remarkable work in veterinary care and community health—people who, like Puma, embody the spirit of resilience and the profound human-animal bond.

"On Puma's last day we fed him a steak, walked a final walk in the local state park along the river, and returned home to his bed where he gently, peacefully, passed from the struggles of not being able to stand anymore but in the arms of his 'dad'," our customer shared.

The jade glass award we created is a tribute to that love, that sacrifice, and that unwavering commitment to doing what's right—even when it's not the easy path.

The Award Carries On

This year, four exceptional veterinary professionals in Peru received the Puma Award, honoring their dedication to bringing care to communities that desperately need it. Each recipient represents the spirit that Puma embodied: resilience, compassion, and the belief that one being can make a difference in the world.

It's a beautiful reminder of why we do what we do at Awards4U. Awards aren't just objects made of glass, crystal, or metal. They're storytellers. They're symbols of values we want to honor and perpetuate. They're reminders that one act of kindness—whether it's saving a dog or starting a nonprofit—can echo across continents and across time.
